The Unpardonable Sin

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come " (Matthew 12:31-32).

The "unpardonable" sin is a heart-attitude sin of unbelief and un-repentance. Deliberate, ongoing rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit is blasphemy because it is rejecting God Himself. Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is denying that the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, and since we are saved through the Holy Spirit's work, to refuse to repent - or even acknowledge our sin - is to refuse God's forgiveness.

Jesus tells us that these people can not be forgiven; not because their sin is worse than anybody else's, but because they will never ask for forgiveness. Whoever rejects the prompting of the Holy Spirit removes himself from the only force that can lead him to repentance and restoration to God.

A true believer will never have to worry about this sin, because only those who have rejected Jesus and turned their backs to God and faith have any need to worry.
